The Amazing Achievements of Stephen Hawking (1942- present)
In the harsh and competitive world of theoretical cosmology, Stephen Hawking carved a reputation and name for himself even with the diagnosis of ALS (
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), a motor neuron disease. He has published over twelve books and has revolutionized the theories and discussions of time, black holes, and even string theory during his career. He transformed physics and was an inspiration for many generations of hopeful scientists or students who follow a dream. Today, he can barely move his fingers, and soon, he will need a new method of communication, for he will not be able to work the computer that allows speech. Currently a professor at Cambridge University, he continues his work today, but grows frustrated because he can no longer do complicated algorithms and must look to his students for this.
"I'm sure my disability has a bearing on why I'm well known. People are fascinated by the contrast between my very limited physical powers, and the vast nature of the universe I deal with. I'm the archetype of a disabled genius, or should I say a physically challenged genius, to be politically correct. At least I'm obviously physically challenged. Whether I'm a genius is more open to doubt."This is a true statement, for his achievements in the scientific world have been contested and many wonder at the cause of his extraordinary fame. Many profiles of his life and theories have been televised and these contain a certain wonderment. Though Stephen has achieved much, many of his theories have been disproven by other scientists, such as much of his work of black holes. This is an infamous story, for his theory of the sight of black holes and their very state of existence that was developed over a lifetime was disproved by a plumber.
Primary Interests
Stephen's primary interests include Einstein's theory of relativity, a strong interest in theories, and the relation of space and time. These also include thermodynamics, relativity, and quantum mechanics. Stephen Hawking has a full publication list of over 198 items. These books and theories are much in relation to wormholes, black holes, Einstein's theory of relativity, and certain calculations to do with space and space time.
Time Frame in History
Though still living, Stephen grew up towards the end of the WWII era and went on to receive an education in the higher classes of society. Though he has 3 grandchildren, Stephen Hawking is still a powerful force today in astrophysics.
Interesting Facts
He was not extremely brilliant in primary school, though advanced above the other students.
"The Hawkings, as one close family friend described them, were an "eccentric" bunch. Dinner was often eaten in silence, each of the Hawkings intently reading a book. The family car was an old London taxi and their home in St. Albans was a three-story fixer-upper that never quite got fixed. The Hawkings also kept bees in the basement, and made fireworks in the greenhouse."- courtesy of Biography.com
He was even close to the bottom of his class at one point in high school
doctors gave him 2 and a half years to live at the age of 21.

“I have hardly ever known a mathematician who was able to reason”
“The usual approach of science of constructing a mathematical model cannot answer the questions of why there should be a universe for the model to describe. Why does the universe go to all the bother of existing?”
“Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change."
“The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge.”
“It surprises me how disinterested we are today about things like physics, space, the universe and philosophy of our existence, our purpose, our final destination. Its a crazy world out there. Be curious.http://www.hawking.org.uk/ for more information
